![]() ![]() Since then, Parks has left journalism to write novels full time. This earned Faces of the Gone the distinction of being the first novel to win both of these prestigious awards. It was incredibly well-received, garnering rave reviews and winning the Shamus Award for best first novel and the Nero Award in 2010. His debut novel, Faces of the Gone, was the start of what would be come a series of novels following reporter Carter Ross. Parks wrote his first novel as a way to kill time while his wife was in graduate school. Of particular note was his retrospective series on the Newark Riots, Crossroads, which earned him the New Jersey Press Association's highest award for enterprise reporting. During his career as a journalist, Parks covered everything from sports to crime to national events. During his studies he worked for the Boston Globe and the New York Times, as an intern and a stringer, respectively, and after graduating, he landed a job at the Washington Post. After high school, he went on the study journalism at Dartmouth College, where he ran his own sports newspaper.
